Karan Johar has found his creative spark again, and it’s all thanks to Mohit Suri’s romantic hit ‘Saiyaara’.
In a chat with Suchin Mehrotra for season 3 of ‘The Streaming Show’, the filmmaker opened up about how the film moved him in a way few movies have in recent years.

“When I watched ‘Saiyaara’, I think after a long time I felt so inspired. I was like, I want to make a love story,” Karan admitted in the teaser of the upcoming episode.
The director, known for some of Bollywood’s most iconic love stories, also reflected on the state of mainstream cinema today. According to him, many top actors shy away from taking creative risks.
“I don’t think many mainstream actors want to take a chance today. I think the box office game has become too important. It’s become too big in all their collective heads,” he said.
‘Saiyaara’, directed by Mohit Suri, the man behind ‘Aashiqui 2’ and ‘Murder 2’, has turned into a cinematic phenomenon. The romantic musical drama stars newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, both of whom have become overnight stars thanks to their heartfelt performances and onscreen chemistry.
The film struck a chord with audiences across India and overseas.
The numbers speak for themselves. ‘Saiyaara’ has raked in over ₹500 crore worldwide, making it the biggest romantic success in Indian cinema history. The film managed to hold its ground even against big releases like ‘Son of Sardaar 2’ and ‘Dhadak 2’.
Its massive run at the box office has cemented its place as the second-highest-grossing film of 2025, just behind the historical epic ‘Chhaava’.
And, for Karan Johar, it seems to have reignited an urge to return to the genre that made him a household name. Given his track record, a Karan Johar love story inspired by ‘Saiyaara’ could be something audiences would eagerly wait for.
